Madeleine Ransom

Dr. Madeleine Ransom is an Associate Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Economics, Philosophy and Political Science at UBC Okanagan, and a Faculty Associate at the W. Maurice Young Centre for Applied Ethics. She holds the Canada Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence, Wellbeing, and Ethics.

Dr. Ransom’s background is in the philosophy of cognitive science, with a focus on the nature of human learning, skill, and attention, and on how these processes can be biased in morally problematic ways. She also investigates how human trust can extend to AI, and how we can preserve the value of human skill in the face of AI workplace integration.

In her role with the DTC she oversees the safety pillar research and leads a project, funded in part by a SSHRC Insight grant, on trustworthy AI. Dr. Ransom and her team are currently developing an educational game that will help people learn about what makes AI (un)trustworthy.
