Abbas Milani

Dr. Abbas Milani is a tenured Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UBC Okanagan, specializing in advanced modeling, simulation and design optimization of composite and biocomposite materials.

He has published over 300 works, including six books, and has secured over $15 million in funding from government and industry. His lab has graduated over 100 students and postdoctoral fellows, many of whom now work in the composite industry and academia.

Dr. Milani has received multiple awards, including the UBC Okanagan Researcher of the Year Award in 2015 and the Killam Faculty Research Award in 2016 for a project with MIT on AI in advanced composite manufacturing. Recognized for teaching excellence, he has won the Honour Roll Award and the School of Engineering Excellence in Teaching Award. His service contributions have been acknowledged with a Gold Medal Service Contribution Award from Academics World and a Reviewer Contribution Award from ASM International.

He is also the founding director of UBC Materials and Manufacturing Research Institute (MMRI), the technical director, Composites Research Network (CRN), lead of the Canadian-International Biocomposites Research Network, lead of the UBC-Pacific Economic Development Canada-Advancing Circular Economy (ACE) program, Lead of UBC-NRC IRAP National Circular Economy Program, lead of NSERC CREATE in Immersive Technologies (CITech), and co-lead for Advanced Materials and Fabrication Core Competency of the UBC STAR program.
